What is Argo?
Argo Investments Limited was established in 1946 and now has a market capitalisation as at 30 September, 2008 of $3.9 billion.
The shares of an investment company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange offer investors professionally managed entry to the share market. Argo invests in the shares and securities of other listed companies and trusts, providing a diversified portfolio, which represents a cross section of Australia’s enterprises, including a number with substantial overseas operations.
Argo is ranked by market capitalisation in the top 100 companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX code ARG). At 30 September, 2008, Argo had 574 million shares on issue.
Argo’s investment policy is simple. Rather than trying to get spectacular rewards in the short-term from high-risk stocks, Argo’s management aims to provide safe, steady growth, secured by a spread of investments over a wide range of the Australian economy. The portfolio has a long-term outlook and investments are made where our criteria for purchasing are met.
Our goal is to identify well-managed businesses with the potential and ability to generate growing and sustainable profits to fund increasing dividend payments. With this in mind, our strategy is to buy and hold quality investments at a price that offers value.
Argo's investments include shares in many of the market leaders listed on the Australian Securities Exchange which form the backbone of Argo's portfolio. In addition to investing in these market leaders, our strategy includes looking to invest in smaller companies with sound management and good prospects for earnings growth in the medium and longer term. Our investment team has a very good track record in selecting quality smaller companies which can provide strong returns as they grow into larger companies or, in some instances, are absorbed by bigger competitors.
Successful share investment depends on research. Argo's investment team includes the executive management plus a number of specialist research analysts. Our research has two objectives: first, to monitor the core holding of leading stocks and smaller companies; and secondly, to find new, successful investments. We are always seeking new ideas.
Argo has produced an Owner's Manual which provides information for you to understand our business strategy and philosophy together with our future opportunities and challenges.
